What is Background Candle HTF Indicator?

Background Candle HTF is an MT5 chart overlay that places candles from a selected higher timeframe behind the current price chart. Timeframe, bar count, colors, opacity, and width settings control the background display.
The overlay keeps broader candle structure visible while the working timeframe remains in the foreground. It adds chart context without making a claim about future direction.
How to Use It in Practice

The overlay places the selected higher-timeframe candles behind the active chart. For example, an H1 candle can be shown behind an M5 chart; bullish higher-timeframe bodies are light blue with green wicks, while bearish bodies are pink with red wicks.
- Compare the high and low of each background candle with the lower-timeframe candles drawn in front of it.
- Select the higher timeframe that is to appear behind the active chart; typical pairings are M1 with M15, M5 with H1, and H1 with D1.
- Change Horizontal shift of the indicator in bars to move the higher-timeframe candles right with a positive value or left with a negative value.
- Keep a single instance on a chart when the inverted colors from multiple instances would make the candle direction hard to distinguish.
Higher-timeframe ranges remain visible behind price, transparency keeps the overlay unobtrusive, and settings support different chart layouts.
MT5 Indicator Parameters

The screenshot above shows the default input parameters in the MT5 settings window.
| Parameter | Description |
|---|---|
| Indicator chart period | Specifies the higher timeframe used for background candles (e.g., 1 Hour, 4 Hours, or 1 Day). The indicator will draw those candles behind the lower timeframe chart. |
| Horizontal shift of the indicator in bars | Moves the higher timeframe candles horizontally by a set number of bars. This is useful for visual adjustments or aligning the candles with your chart layout. |
